If you're a pet owner and you don't have a dog license in the city, police are urging you to get one.

Utica officials say in the past few days with the frigid temperatures, they have received multiple calls for roaming pets.

Police say if your four legged friend goes missing, and if its properly licensed and wearing a tag, your pet can be easily returned to you.

"We see it a lot sometimes in the winter because there are more dogs that are loose or get lost or run away during the winter than any other time of the year. Some experts say it's because animals can't find their scent with the snow, so they can't get back home like any other time of the year," said Sgt. Steve Hauck of the UPD.

The UPD says they'll be looking out for proper dog licenses when the mayor's quality of life sweeps start up again.
