Bill Gifford served in the U.S. Army as a medic in Germany and France during the Vietnam conflict.

He is the son of Mal and Helen Gifford. As one of seven children, Bill attended Whitesboro High School and graduated with a BS from Utica College and a Masters from Cortland.

After returning home from the service, Bill became a science teacher, first at Remsen, then at New York Mills, before retiring from Whitesboro High School. In addition to being an educator, he also coached little league in Oriskany, basketball in New York Mills and was a Cub Scout leader.

Bill, who is a lifelong Giants fan, lives in Oriskany, with his wife Mary and their dog, "Maggie." They have two children, Amy Arnold and Matt Gifford, who both live in the Syracuse area. Bill and Mary are anxiously awaiting the birth of their first grandchild.

We salute you Bill Gifford for your dedicated service during Vietnam, and we're proud to have you as our Hometown Hero.

hometown heroes

Our nation’s best make significant sacrifices while serving in our military to help preserve our freedom and way of life.

From Afghanistan to Iraq, Desert Storm to Kuwait, Vietnam, Korea or World War II, our sons and daughters have sacrificed to serve our country all over the world.

Nominate someone who you think should be a "Hometown Hero."

On Monday nights, WUTR Eyewitness News at 6 and CNYhomepage.com will honor chosen submissions of hometown mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers during our on-going Hometown Heroes campaign.

We will honor Hometown Heroes stemming from the nominations that we receive from our community. Each Hero will be featured on air and right here on CNYhomepage.com.
