The residents in Mohawk and Ilion have spoken. They approved the proposed two-school district merger by a two to one margin last night.

Officials from both schools were in meetings all day.

They say they'll be doing more than internal meetings, as they also want to get the community and students involved in the transition.

Before the merger vote even happened- district officials had a transition plan in place.

"If it did pass we would have steps ready to start on today and get everything merged by the end of June," explained Interim Superintendent, Gene Beirne.

In between that time- residents will elect seven new board of education members for the newly formed district on March 27th.

District officials are also looking to create transition teams to build the new district.

Each team will be responsible for handling different topics including athletics, programs and curriculum and school identity.

And they're asking invested community members and students to be a part of that.

"Students have a role in most of those committees, not all of them but most of them, in particular the selection of the mascot, alma mater," said Ilion Superintendent, Cosimo Tangorra.

If you're interested in being a part of a team, you can find more information at:

Also, residents wanting to run for a position on the new school board, petitions will be available Wednesday, Feb. 20th at both district offices.
