The Sauquoit Valley Optimist Club is trying to keep their community a little warmer this winter.

And they did so by having their first ever Hat, Mitten and Glove Toss at the Sauquoit Valley High School's varsity basketball game tonight.

Attendees tossed the items onto the court after the first basket was made by the Indians in the second half of the game.

"We wanted to give something back that was useful that could be used all year long. The Sauquoit Valley Optimist Club's motto is "friend of youth," but for older people that need help too. It's Christmas time and people need help. That's what we are here for," said Kevin Fahy, one of the organizers.

The proceeds of the event will be given to Sauquoit Valley Friends and Neighbors, an organization that helps families in crisis within the community and school system.
