One municipality is looking at technology to better track the city's assets.

Utica Department of Public works Commissioner Dave Short says he wants to install GPS tracking devices in the snow plows and other city vehicles.

Wednesday night, he brought the idea to the Public Works and Transportation Committee meeting.

He says other municipalities have this system in place, helping them track equipment and supervise employees.

"Not only can a taxpayer call me and say I didn't see the plow or I'm concerned that no salt was put down. I would be able to let them know, yes from my data the plow was down and yes we did salt. It's a great management tool on my half," said Short.

Mr. Short says the system can also save on the use of salt.  He says he plans on coming to the common council with figures and numbers of how much this would cost.
