The New York Islanders will be taking on the Philadelphia Flyers in the coming weeks.

But, what will make this hockey game significant to some Central New Yorkers is that it will be helping out one area organization.

The New York hockey team has chosen the Masonic Care Community in Utica as its charity of the game.

So, if you're into hockey, it will be an opportunity for you to see the division rivals play while helping a good cause.

"A lot of people support the work that we are doing and the islanders want to be a part of that," said Jon- Paul Kidwell, the Director of Development.

Founded in 1893, the Masonic Care Community employs 900 people and houses 500 residents on its campus.

Kidwell says the organization faces financial challenges and this upcoming event will help offset costs.

"Nursing homes, adult care facilities run deficits most often and we do as well. It's because of the declining reimbursements from state and federal governments," said Kidwell.

The organization says proceeds from the hockey game will go towards resident care and activities.

"Monies raised from the program like this could be used to pay for lunches and social outings. We literally have thousands every year that go on," said Kidwell.

The masonic care community is selling tickets to the game.
