When it comes to fad diets--we all know some people who have lost weight on them. But do you really want to eat just grilled chicken and lettuce for the rest of your life? Or just drink juice for days? Is that even healthy?

"When it comes to really rapid weight loss what we're losing is water, and also some muscle, and when we gain weight back, what we gain is fat. So you end up having more fat on your body as a result. So any diet that restricts a certain food group or food, you really need to take a look at."

As with everything, moderation and portion control are key.  Focusing on eating healthy and exercise as a lifestyle is going to keep off weight. A good diet needs to be something you can follow when you're dining out, or over someone's house.   Not every day has to be perfect - but overall, incorporate lots of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Pat says everyone is different, so eating three good sized meals a day with healthy snacks work for some, while 6 small meals work for others.  Eat when you're hungry, and stop when you're full, not sick. Pat says the idea is to cut down on fat and calories, but not deprive yourself. And if you swerve a little, Salzer says don't hesitate.

"If you were driving today, and you went over the speed limit, you wouldn't say, 'I already blew it today I mine as well drive over the speed limit all day long, tomorrow I'll drive safe;' you would get right back on track."

View food the same way.  And watch out for hidden calories in dressings, sauces, cheese. Again, think of it as a lifestyle, not a race.
