With the coldest air of the winter season now here.. you may want to winterize your pipes. If you haven't acted yet, experts say it's not too late.. but that you do want to act quickly. Outdoor piping -- specifically cooper and plastic -- are the most susceptible to breaking. Experts say once water freezes in pipes it can only take 24 hours for pipes to burst. But, there are a number of ways to prevent this from happening.

Piping expert Scott Cannistra says, "The best thing to do right now is put some insulation on it. You can use some foam insulation or pipe in solution, which wraps around the wire, around the pipe which is very simple. But if its extreme cold then you would want to go to something which is called a heat tape and that basically applies heat to that pipe."

Scott also says if you have any hoses hooked up in your garage, it's best to shut off the water to them.
