Hometown Hero Louis Trunko

Louis J. Trunko was born in 1924, on a farm bordering the Erie Canal, in Higginsville, NY. He attended one room schoolhouse on a farm - then he went to high school in Verona. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp after he graduated in 1942. He then shipped out for the Pacific where he was assigned to a C-47 transport plane stationed near New Guinea.

After the war ended he went to Iwo Jima and then on to Japan and eventually returned to the States. After getting home, he went on to college got married in 1949 to Joyce Fike from Rome. He joined the Verona Fire Department, where he served as an officer and then a commissioner. He was the president of Federal Land Bank Farm Credit Services - when he retired in 1985.

Louis and Joyce are the parents of Tom, LouAnn, Mary, and Diane. They have 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
