Parents living in the Utica City School District will soon have the
option of sending their children to a charter school. The Utica Academy
of Science, approved earlier this week by the state education
department, is opening this fall.
The charter school will be a sister school to the Syracuse Academy of Science. But the charter school will also have to work with the Utica City School District, as city tax payers will be paying for the students attending Utica Academy of Science.
Utica district superintendent Bruce Karam says this will have a negative impact on his district, especially considering the current financial situation.
"We can't afford to lose the state aid funding that will be diverted to charter schools in a time when we're already running deficits. Which will translate into larger numbers of layoffs of teachers and staffs and i am very concerned about our financial situation due to this development," says Bruce Karam, superintendent of Utica City School District.
Eyewitness News reached out to the director of the Syracuse Academy of Science. He says the Utica City School District would be eligibile for transitional aid if the Utica Academy of Science charter school requires more than two percent of its budget.
