On Call

From broken bones to intoxicated students, the Hamilton College EMT's are the first to respond at all hours of the day and night.

Hamilton College senior Conner Polet says, "It can happen anytime, day or night. We all get a page from our radio's that gives a location and some information about what happened. We'll respond and we usually get there within 1 or 2 minutes."

The group of 21 devotes 150 hours to become Yew York State Basic Life Support certified and they do it voluntarily.

The Director of EMS Diann Lynch says, "Usually their taking a class 2 or 3 nights a week during a little bit more than a semester, it's like taking a 5th class actually. They don't get college credit for it, its strictly volunteer and they don't get paid it's a volunteer agency. They do this strictly because they have a desire to, they usually say help people and be involved in the community."

Students don't have to be studying a medical related field; in fact it attracts history to biology majors. And the EMT's say they love what they do because of the team atmosphere.

Hamilton Junior Tara Hansen says, "We generally tend to work as a team, we've worked together so much and we're all very close so we just kind of settle into a mindset and go from there"

Sophomore EMT Lillian Mccullough says, "It's almost like a sport in its own sense, you have to work with other people and it's to achieve a common goal, which happens to be helping people on the campus."
