We've heard of movie critics who get paid to write reviews for respective publications. But, one area organization is giving students an opportunity to critique musicals through a different platform.
Eyewitness News Reporter Jennifer Lee shows us why these Broadway enthusiasts need their smartphones to do the job.
"This is our youth ambassador pass. when everyone shows their tickets when they walk through the door we just flash them this and we walk to our seats," explained Herkimer student, Michael Castellano.
Castellano is one of 39 students who were given five free Broadway Theatre League season tickets for shows playing at the Stanley.
"I don't have to plan a big trip to New York and buy tickets. And worry about the train and all that. It's just really easy," said Castellano.
But, there is a catch. In exchange for the free tickets, these students have to write their own reviews via social media.
It's all a part of Broadway Theatre League's Youth Ambassador Program; a way to engage area teenagers and encourage their interest in theatre.
"I'm on Facebook and twitter. Basically any social media site there is. It's easy to connect with all these people," said Castellano.
Tonight, the Youth Ambassadors were critiquing the Tony-Award winning show, A Chorus Line.
Students post their thoughts during or after the show, good or bad.
"We look at the choreography, the acting, the musical numbers. How good the cast worked together," explained Nicole Kasprzyk, a junior from Poland Central School.
Although many say it's exciting to write reviews and Tweet live during the show, most students say the program is also a great way to network.
"Meeting the cast every time is so much fun. It's a great opportunity just talking to them about it all. They are great role models. It's a lot of fun," said Kasprzyk.
The Youth Ambassadors have three more shows to review. If you would like to follow their posts, you can find them on Facebook and Twitter.
