Newman Development Group has proposed the building of a 4-story, 300-bed apartment complex that will be used mainly to house college students, although the college has no ties to the project.
But some community members, primarily those who own student housing facilities in the city are concerned this will hurt their business. Newman presented the plans to the Oneonta Planning Commission last week, and they say it shouldn't hurt area businesses.
"It should be a very minimal effect because of the continuing increase in enrollment, that the students that they take are the new students that come into the state college, and it's very close to the campus so they think it's going to be a very positive thing," says Dennis Finn, Oneonta Planning Commission chairman.
Finn says they are still in the early stages of the project. But the tentative goal is to open the facility for the 2014 academic year.
