While Oneida County says it's not releasing information on pistol permit holders, the Herkimer County Sheriff is saying it's better to be safe than sorry.

Sheriff Chris Farber tells Eyewitness News that Herkimer County is encouraging everyone to fill out an "opt-out" form.

He says they talked about the issue with the county attorney's office, and says if the pistol permit information were to be FOIL'ed, it would be released.

"Don't take a chance, if the bill got repealed, it would be a different story but still that FOIL has always been out there, that information has always been out there and out there for the public to see," said Sheriff Farber.

The deadline to "opt-out" is May 15th.
